Do you feel that today's musicians have properly prepared to "master" their instruments or just get by?

I am growing weary of the 3 chord wonder songs...kind of like the Barry Manilow formula in the 70's. I'll bet the kids of today could actually master their instruments if they took more than 2 months of lessons and didn't just all sing while using the "pros" as their back-up band. Thoughts?
